Woodman Weekly Nov. 13-17 | Holiday Market, Punctuality, Ski Day, Urban Soul Exhibit, Fundraisers, Athletics,
Dear Woodman Families:
Although it was only a three-day school week for students, it was another busy one. We commend our Senior Concert band, student speakers/contributors and feeder high schools (Henry Wise Wood and Dr. E.P. Scarlett) for their participation in a memorable Remembrance Day ceremony. Due to capacity issues, we were not able to host parents in the gymnasium, but we will share photos on our website shortly.
Across the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) today, staff participated in thoughtful professional learning focussed on Indigenous practices and knowledge systems. Woodman staff gained a deep sense of the role of fostering a sense of belonging and community for our Indigenous learners, and all learners that we serve on a daily basis.
We send our Woodman students warm wishes for their short break from school, returning to regular classes on Wed. Nov. 15. Note that the main office will be closed to the public until then, with no monitoring of telephones and staff email inboxes.
Incredible Turn-Out Student Holiday Market
Dozens of students participated in the Student Holiday Market interest meeting, which will run from Dec. 18-21. Students are encouraged to listen for daily announcements on the next planning meeting. In the meantime, interested participants are encouraged to get busy preparing their wares for sale, as well as identifying a local charity to support with a portion of the proceeds. Interested students may gain more information from Ms. Jamieson, library assistant, or Mme. Wister (Rm 10).
Student Punctuality
School doors open at 8:55 for student entry. This allows them 10 minutes to organize their belongings before reporting to class at 9:05. Many students are arriving after the late bell at 9:08, causing them to miss important instructional time. Let’s work together between home and school to support punctuality, which is an important life skill.
Grade 6-9 Lake Louise Ski Day – Tues. Dec. 12
Earlier this week, families received an email requesting a confirmation of interest in having their child participate in a full day ski adventure ($145). The 80 spots are filling quickly and the deadline to confirm interest has been extended until Nov. 15th. Please email Mr. Kelba (pekelba@cbe.ab.ca) or Mme. Reeves (mlreeves@cbe.ab.ca) if more information is needed.
TREX – “Urban Soul” Art Exhibit, Learning Commons
Woodman is excited for the opportunity to host two different Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibits (TREX) exhibits this year, one in Nov/Dec and one in Feb/Mar. The first one arrives the end of next week and will be available for viewing for a few weeks at Woodman, including over Learning Conferences. We encourage families to come into the school on Thurs. Nov. 22, in between 4:00-8:00, to view the exhibit. All art classes will have the opportunity to view the work in class and will be working on a project inspired by the exhibit. Learn more about the exhibit through this press release under Resources.
Parent Group Fundraisers
The Woodman Music Parents’ Association is actively working on its CocoBrooks Fundraiser, to support music education programming. It will also be selling small snacks in the main foyer during the Thurs. Nov. 22 Learning Conferences (4:00-8:00).
Launching next week (Nov. 16) is a School Council Purdy’s Chocolate Fundraiser. The goal is to raise $5000.00 for the Woodman school library. More information will be communicated through commercial emails for those who have signed up to receive them.
The CBE commercial email sign up page can be found through the following link: https://www.cbe.ab.ca/news-centre/school-messages/Pages/default.aspx
